Endurance course
Sheds light on new rules

Over 50 endurance judges and veterinary doctors attended a day-long seminar-cum-refresher course at the Abu Dhabi Hilton, Abu Dhabi, on Thursday, February 12, 2009. It was organized by the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation.
The seminar was NOT for beginners and mainly aimed to fulfill the criteria of attending a course equal to different status once in every two years (FEI Star Rating for Veterinarians and Judges, according to Endurance Rules).

The seminar and the refresher course were being done in cooperation with the Oraganising Committee of the HH The President of the United Arab Emirates Endurance Cup which took place on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Emirates International Endurance Village, Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi. It was the 10th consecutive year of the President Endurance Cup, which attracts riders from all over the world.

The day-long course threw light on the new FEI rules and regulations, particularly the New Rules for Endurance Events, 7th edition, which came into effect from January 1, 2009 and helped them to enhance their knowledge on the changes in the rules.

Dr. Hallvard Sommerseth, Head of the Veterinary Department at the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation and also a FEI Veterinary Judge,
monitored the proceedings and went through the new Endurance Rules, particularly laying focus on the newly introduced rules from 2009. Topics which came under discussion comprised every single aspect of the new rules. Specific emphasis was laid on the rules for dress code, rest period, qualification, and reference to certain terminologies. ( for eg, 'remove', 'eliminate' 'retire', 'disqualification' et al)

Mr. Ian Williams, Director of Non Olympic Sports Department, FEI and also FEI Endurance Judge, gave a brief run-down of FEI in general and the new rules in particular. While stressing on the importance of dress code, he stated that the President of the FEI HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, felt that it was very important to maintain decent dress code during the endurance events. She felt that since Endurance sport was the second biggest sport in VFEI, 'smart enough apparel' should be used.

Dr. Martha Misheff from the Dubai Equine Hospital dealt with the general statistics related to injuries to horses during riding. She said over the last three years, on an average eight horses were injured per year which need not be related to metabolic reasons as many came under 'stress' factors like those suffered by race horses running in other equestrian events like flat racing or show jumping.

Several other endurance-related topics came under discussion and the inter-active question-answer session enlightened the participants.

Before the seminar began, Taleb Dhaher Al Muhairi, Secretary General of the Federation, welcomed the delegates and hoped that the Federation's endevaour to throw light on the new FEI endurance rules for the star-rated judges and veterinary doctors will yield fruits and make them have a clear understanding of the related issues.
